How to Stop Noodling Your Bass Practice Time Away

by Shawn Bradshaw

Have you ever sat down to practice your bass and this happens? You start out focused, but the next thing you know 15 minutes have gone by and you’re just mindlessly noodling.

How did that happen? You have no idea.

OK, I have a confession. I’m a little ADD.

SQUIRREL!

It’s hard for me to keep on task without “tricking” myself to do so. I also know you may have the same problem or you probably wouldn’t be reading this.

Stop WatchSo here’s my “trick”. I use timers. For anything I need to do including bass practice.

I designate a period of time I’m going to focus on a topic. Which in the case of bass practice is usually not more than 10 minutes before I change my channel.

So I may work on a section of a song for 10 minutes. Then when the timer goes off I’ll stop working on that, reset the timer for another 10 minutes and work on something else.

I might come back to the song I was first working in the same practice session, but getting away from it and coming back helps me keep my focus.

The timer has the magical ability to keep you on task. You know there is a time limit.

Even if you think this sound stupid…try it. Every smart phone has a built in timer.

It’s a good thing I’m finished writing this, my timer just went off 🙂
