String Crossing

One of the biggest challenges will be the string crossings between the E string (4th) and the D string (2nd). Here are some prep exercises to help you with these crossings. As you work with these you will notice an improvement in the groove of the line.

In Ex.2 you will alternate between the A note (E string, 5th fret) and G note (D string, 5th fret). Start with your right hand index and ring finger alternating in quarter notes (Ex.2a), then 8th note triplets. (Ex.2b). An 8th note triplet is playing 3 times in every beat.

Bass Line Pattern in Triplets

Now that you are more comfortable with the string skips, let’s get back to the basic pattern only played with 8th note triplets.

Bass Line Pattern With Swing 8th Notes

Ex.5 shows the line played with a swing feel. You can think of a swing feel as a triplet with the middle note omitted.
